Norton City Offices will be closed Friday, Jan. 12, in observance of Lee-Jackson Day and Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The following schedule for garbage pick-up will be in effect: Jan. 12: Regular Residential and Commercial Garbage Routes will be picked up. Residents are asked to have garbage out by 8 a.m.; Jan. 13: Regular Commercial Garbage Pickup.; Jan. 15: Regular Residential and Commercial Garbage will be picked up. Residents are asked to have garbage out by 8 a.m.; Jan. 16: Recycling will be picked up.

Oil Painting Class

First Month Hike

Description:
Join the City of Norton for a New Year’s hike on High Knob. Hike from Legion Park to the High Knob summit and return. This is a 9-10 mile hike that should take about five hours.
The hike is strenuous. Be prepared to climb more than 2,000 feet in elevation.
Weather on High Knob can be unpredictable, especially during the winter. Dress warmly and layer appropriately. Wear sturdy hiking boots/shoes. Questions about what to wear? Check out these helpful tips: http://bit.ly/2CiXo96, or give us a call. Bring water and snack.
Registration Required. Email Katie Dunn, katied@nortonva.org, or call (276) 679-1160 to register for the hike. Hike is limited to 10 people.

Trash Treasures Workshop

This month’s workshop will feature a winter theme, with an emphasis on snowmen. Snowmen crafts will include painting snowmen on boards and rocks. Other crafts will feature a little winter mouse made from a cork and a wooden star with snowflake decorations. This workshop is part of a monthly series held at the community center as a collaboration between Norton Parks and Recreation Department, Upper Tennessee River Roundtable and Keep Southwest Virginia Beautiful to demonstrate how to reuse items instead of discarding them.
